If advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence continue at their current pace, and computational power continues to increase exponentially, it is just a matter of time before machines surpass humans in every aspect of practical intelligence. But would such an intelligent machine also be conscious? Would it have a subjective experience of the world as we do? This question is related to the infamous mind-body problem - and its answer might very well lie beyond the reach of our current natural and technical sciences.
